iNyala: A visual art voyage

Following an open call to the local higher educational institutions on July 2019 garnering artistic proposals that best represents the theme “Imagine the Impossible” with sustainability practice, nine teams of students emerged as the finalists after a highly competitive judging process by the professional artists in the industry. Each finalist team was awarded with an allotted amount of RM1,500 to execute their final artworks to be exhibited at a month-long exhibition at REXKL from 1 – 30 November 2019 and eventually determine 5 winning teams of different award categories.

The finalists’ artworks comprised of Reverse Rain Box by Unison Indra (UCSI University); Uniarea by Creaters (Dasein Academy of Art); Digital Shui by H2O (MMU); Icosahedron by BIMDs (The One Academy); Mindforest by CD-rw (Dasein Academy of Art); Cocoon Made Me Do It by Ramai-Ramai (MMU); Time Machine by Sue Ann (Raffles College of Higher Education); Swing Beyond by BIMDs (The One Academy); and NOÉL by ODRANOÉL (UCSI University).

There were a total of five awards including Best of Show (Cash Prize: RM8,000), Best Use of Technology (Cash Prize: RM3,000), Best Visual Appearance (Cash Prize: RM3,000), Best Inspiration (Cash Prize: RM3,000) and Crowd Favorite (Cash Prize: RM2,000). The awards were presented in recognition to the following criteria:

The Best Inspiration Award: Concept, Originality, Creativity, Innovation and Relation to Key Theme “Imagine the Impossible”

The Best Visual Appearance Award: Quality of Artwork, Visual Appearance, Installation Method and Overall Presentation

The Best Use of Technology Award: Durability, Stability, Technology Application and Interactive Elements

The Best of Show Award: Best score from all the criteria stated above

The Crowd Favourite Award: Best engagement rate based on the parameter of highest visitors count with longest duration captured with audience measurement technology deployed at iNYALA 2019 exhibition. 

The Crowd Favorite Award: Time Machine, Sue Ann from Raffles College of Higher Institution. The data showed that a total of 14,472 visitors and total 120 hours interacted with the artwork.

The Best Inspiration Award: Reverse Rain Box, Unison Indra from UCSI University.

The Best Visual Appearance Award: Swing Beyond, BIMDs from The One Academy.

The Best Use of Technology Award: Reverse Rain Box, Unison Indra from UCSI University.

The Best of Show Award: Time Machine, Sue Ann from Raffles College of Higher Institution.

iNYALA is committed to sustainability efforts wherein the light art installations are integrated with energy efficiency elements and will only be powered up when there is interaction and engagement between the audience and the installations. iNYALA advocates for responsible consumption and production as great concept and execution should always be infused with sustainability considerations on artwork’s second life and innovative use of recycled materials.

INYALA is Malaysia’s first interactive light art exhibition to celebrate the interconnectedness of creativity and innovation, bringing imagination to possibilities through immersive art, technology and visual-sensory experiences. The one-month exhibition has recorded more than 8,000 visitors.

iNYALA 2019 is organized by Helio Media, powered by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), REXKL, AirAsia, Yayasan Sime Darby, Passionation, Visit Malaysia 2020, Kini Events, FNL PRJCT and RUBIX.
